Three Ways To Make Your Carpet Look Cleaner Without A Shampooer

Catherine Edwards

A carpet that looks dingy and dirty can make your whole room feel dirty. If you have a family gathering or other special event coming up, you may want to make it look cleaner, but there's probably not time to give it a thorough shampoo! Luckily, there are a few easy ways to make your carpet look cleaner without calling in the pros or getting it wet with shampoo. Here's a look.

Do A Baking Soda Treatment

Baking soda is well known for its deodorizing properties, but it is also good at absorbing moisture and encouraging dirt to lift out of your carpet. Purchase a large box of baking soda, and sprinkle it over your carpet. Be generous; you really can't use too much. Rub your hand or a soft brush over the carpet to work the baking soda down into it a little. Then, let it sit for a couple of hours. As the baking soda absorbs moisture, this helps loosen dirt particles from the carpet. Go over the carpet with a vacuum cleaner a couple of times, and it will look a lot cleaner.

Focus On the Edges

Sometimes a carpet may look dirty because the edges of the carpet have not been cleaned properly. The shade of accumulated dirt and dust along the edges can make the whole area look less appealing. So use the wand attachment on your vacuum, and suction up any debris between the carpet and the wall. You may need to use your fingers or a brush to loosen stuck-on hair and grime as you vacuum.

Give It a Towel Bath

If there are areas that look especially discolored, and you have at least a few hours before any guests arrive, you can give those areas a towel bath. Soak a towel in water and a little dish soap, and then wring out as much water as you can. Lay the towel over the dirty area, and then stand on it. The dirt will soak up into the towel, giving your carpet a cleaner look. Next, lay a dry towel over the area, and press down on it to absorb the lingering dampness.

With the tips above, your carpet will look a lot fresher even without a shampoo. However, you may want to have it professionally cleaned later on by a dry carpet cleaning service when you have time so that it truly looks its best in the future.
