Keeping Your Home's Carpet Looking Great

Catherine Edwards

There are many problems that your carpet can experience. While rips and punctures may be on the forefront of a homeowners mind, there are many other issues that they will need to know how to address if they are to keep their carpet in good condition.

Removing Gum

Chewing gum that gets on the carpet can be a major issue. In addition to being extremely sticky, it can be possible for the gum to get pressed into the fibers of the carpet. This will make it extremely difficult to remove without ripping out many of the fibers in the process. One way to help remove this gum will be to use an ice cube to make the gum as hard as possible. This will make it easier to remove the larger chunks without damaging the fibers. After you have removed as much of the gum as possible, there are carpet safe degreasing products that will help to dissolve the remaining gum so that it can be scrubbed out with a wet cloth.

Cleaning Pet Waste

Your pet may be a major source of wear on your carpet. In particular, vomit and other fluids or waste from the animal can be extremely damaging to the carpet. Unfortunately, your pet will likely have the tendency to relieve itself in areas it has previously used. As a result, you will have to fully neutralize any scents that may have been left behind. This will require the use of a specialized cleaning product that will be able to breakdown these scents so that the pet will not be tempted to continue using the same spot.

Preventing Stains

Stains can be a major threat, and while it is not always possible to remove severe stains, it may be possible to drastically reduce the risk of stains impacting your carpet. This is done through the use of a protective coating or fiber sealant that will be able to stop the pigments from entering the fibers. Applying these substances will help to preserve the appearance of the carpet without impacting its color as these sealants will be clear.

Restore The Carpet's Color

As time passes and the carpet is used, its color will start to fade. This is often the result of dirt accumulating deep between the fibers as this will cause the color to appear dull. A professional deep cleaning of the carpet will usually restore its color by removing this deep dirt. Professional carpet cleanings once a year will help to prevent the carpet's color from fading by removing this dirt before it contributes to this problem.
