3 Myths About Caring for Your Dry Clean Garments

Catherine Edwards

Caring for your garments will be an important step if you are to minimize the amount of wear and staining that they suffer so that they can be kept for years before needing to be replaced. In this regard, understanding how to care for your garments that need dry cleaning is important.

Myth: It Is Safe To Wash Dry Clean Only Items

There is an assumption that there is little harm in washing garments that are labeled as requiring dry cleaning. However, this can actually be a significant mistake as it will be able to greatly worsen the amount of wear and damage that the garments experience from routine cleaning. This is particularly true if you make the mistake of machine drying these garments as the intense heat from the dryer can be enough to cause significant damage to the garments very quickly. If you must clean these garments without taking them to a dry cleaner, you should handwash the garments (but avoid harsh detergents) before allowing them to air dry.

Myth: Dry Cleaning Will Be Extremely Inconvenient

One reason that a person may want to avoid dry cleaning their garments is due to the belief that this will always be a difficult or inconvenient process due to the need to transport the garments to the dry cleaners. In reality, many dry cleaning services will offer to pick up and deliver these garments so that their customers will be able to utilize their services without suffering major disruptions or inconveniences. This can be ideal for those that have schedules that may make it difficult to get to the dry cleaners before they close.

Myth: Dry Cleaned  Garments Should Kept In A Bag Until They Are Needed

When you have garments dry cleaned, it is a common practice for them to be returned to you in a plastic bag and hanger. Some people may assume that this means that these garments should stay in these bags until they are ready for use. However, you will want to remove these garments and store them as normal. This will prevent the garments from developing a musty smell due to the air in the bag becoming stale. As a result of these issues, you should always remove the garments from the dry cleaning bags and hang them as normal.
